In the past few years, the world has witnessed many stories in the media about firms masking the truth of their financial situation, auditors who failed to guard the markets’ credibility, and analysts who falsely represented stock value to the public. The net result has been a serious decline in trust in the financial markets, which has also spilled over into business relationships. Although all of these events seem very recent, they are actually an extension of a phenomenon that has been occurring for a long time. This article discusses trust and the assumption of risks in relationships, revealing that it is not easy to build and sustain trust in today’s business world. The article also addresses how, given this predicament, we can effectively achieve trust by creating the appropriate infrastructure and institutional mechanisms in organizations.
