UK Associate
Tom is a Director of Inter-Logics and Visiting Professor of Management Learning and Leadership at the University of Lincoln. For 20 years he was a Principal Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, then a partner in The Learning Company Project, which carried out research into learning organisations and ran an annual conference to disseminate good practice.
For the past 10 years Tom has been a consultant, originally specialising in self-managed learning and self-development he then focussed on broader issues of organisational learning and change. He has authored/co-authored over 40 books, including the best-selling Manager’s Guide to Self-Development (McGraw-Hill, 5th edn 2007), The Learning Company (McGraw-Hill, 2nd edn 2000) and the subsequent Learning Company Toolkit (Peter Honey Publications, 2004). These proved to be somewhat seminal works that have influenced a number of others in seeing the concept of a learning organisation as being much more than just a “training” organisation.
Tom has worked in many sectors and countries. Recently he has conducted several large-scale surveys of customer and other stakeholder engagement for The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, and similar studies for Olympus Optical – Microscope, Blood Analyser and Photographic Divisions - and for Novartis Nutritional Products. He is currently undertaking a Department of Health funded evaluation – from the perspectives of diverse stakeholders - of care homes that are using innovative methods to become learning organisations. In 2004 – 2006 he led a programme of Action Learning sets for 18 of 28 pilot New Types of Worker (NToW) projects for Skills for Care. He also carried out an in-depth case exploration of the way in which St Monica Trust, Bristol, used the concept of a Learning Organisation (based on the book mentioned earlier) to move from near bankruptcy to becoming a highly successful organisation, winning two Skills for Care National Accolades in 2007. Another recent project included an evaluation of NToW projects for The Bath Partnership - a co-operative venture between South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath Social Services departments, three independent sector care home partners, and the four Primary Care Trusts across the three local authority boundaries.
Tom’s current clients also include the East Midlands Local Government Association – Action Learning sets for Directors; development and implementation of strategic issues through Action Learning with the St Monica Trust top team; leadership development and organisational change for the Egyptian Post Office; Action Learning in Care Homes in the West Midlands, funded by Skills for Care.
As well as Visiting Professor at Lincoln Tom is an Associate and Doctoral Supervisor at Henley Management College. He is a prize-winning photographer and incorporates photography and video in his development activities.
